The Columbian Exchange is often times praised for the positive things that it brought about such as the exchange of new animals, foods, and plants between the Old World and the New World. However, not all of the aspects of the Columbian Exchange were positive. It is also important to realize that the Columbian Exchange can also be credited for the transmission of diseases which had adverse effects on both the Old and New World alike. Diseases were transferred from Europeans to Native Americans.Europeans and Native Americans suffered immensely from disease that were foreign to them.
Old World diseases brought to the New World:
New World diseases brought to the Old World:
Majority of the diseases were brought over by the Europeans to the new world, which impacted the natives almost instantly. The natives were effected by these diseases because they had never had exposure with these diseases so the had no immunity to them.The deadliest of these diseases was Smallpox, it was said it killed more then 50% of the native population.
Old World diseases brought to the New World:
- Small Pox
- Measles
- Malaria
- Chicken Pox
New World diseases brought to the Old World:
- Syphilis
- Polio
